Moods

And no, no one need duck. No flying hormones here.

Part of the purpose of this blog and website is to promote my writing and especially my books (Want a copy? Hit the “Buy Now” button). My writing process includes listening to music that ties into what I’m writing. It feeds the flow, lyrics might inspire some dialogue. When I was writing These Foolish Things, I listened to a lot of love songs and “old standards,” like “These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)”. The below link is my favorite rendition, Ella Fitzgerald and the Oscar Peterson Trio:

Ella Fitzgerald “These Foolish Things”

I have CDs of love songs. I have MIXTAPES of love songs (Yeah, I figured that if you play, maybe someone will show up. There’s a different way of phrasing it, but I know there are some dirty minds out there, so…) Elvis, “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Chrissy Hynde “I’ll Stand By You,” Mary Chapin Carpenter singing John Lennon’s “Grow Old Along With Me,” you get the idea. Since Liz and Ty are great fans of jazz and Diana Krall

Diana Krall, “Let’s Fall In Love”

WHOM’s Love Songs At Night with Sandra Harris. Set the mood. Keep it flowing. Feed the muse. If music be the food of love, play on…okay, now I’m stealing from Shakespeare, but always go with the best if you’re going to boost something.

So now…

I’m writing The Baldie Chronicles. It is the prequel to These Foolish Things (and At Last, to be released very soon, I promise) . Not so much a love story as a woman going through breast cancer treatment. “Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky”? “I Can See Clearly Now”? (Which I can’t beuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii – that was from Exhibit A. This post has cat hair on it because my desk and keyboard were visited. Having made his contribution, he has moved on) Inspirational, uplifting music? Or maybe something quiet and contemplative like Gregorian chant or some of Hildegard von Bingen’s plainsong? (Yes, I really, really listen to 12th century compositions).

Not so much.

I have been listening/watching something else. There are plenty of stories out there about cancer survivors

Not that guy

But there is one story inparticular that I have been following closely. Obsessively. Possibly to the point of it affecting (and yes, Kids, it is AFFECT the story. That is correct usage) the story and Liz Gardner’s journey. It’s a story of someone who has, like Liz, kind of sleep-walked through life until the diagnosis changed everything. No “Bucket List,” just extreme motivation to keep going…

Um…

I see things kind of going like this…

Breaking Abbey

Say her name…
